River Stone Cottage
The River Stone Cottage
Cottage Features
The River Stone Cottage is a restored timber worker's house with two bedrooms, each featuring a king-sized bed, ceiling fan, and scenic views. The living room includes a cozy wood fireplace. The kitchen has a double sink set in a Spotted Gum slab countertop and an open-plan dining space. The lounge room has a corner couch that can be used as two single beds. There is also an additional daybed on the front porch. The external bathroom features a spacious shower with river rock tiling, a Coachwood vanity, sink, and toilet.
Building History
This is one of six original timber worker's houses that have been restored in the Old Saw Mill Town at Brooman. The building is made of all local timber, including original floorboards, weatherboards, and Coachwood architraves. A unique wall feature above the main fireplace showcases pieces of all the local timber species used in the original and restored construction.
Off-Grid Living
The property is completely off-grid and powered by a central solar system with underground 240V power. Water is collected and stored in galvanised iron tanks, and an instantaneous gas water heater provides hot water.
Brooman Features
The old town site is located on a large bend in the Clyde River, which is great for canoeing, bass fishing, and platypus watching. The area is home to dozens of unique bird species, as well as a resident mob of Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Red-Necked Wallabies, Bandicoots, and Possums.
The buildings date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, when they supported a thriving community of up to 200 people. Brooman once had a post office, school, dance hall, general store, and cottages for the sawmill workers and their families.
