Mechanics House
The Mechanics House
Cottage Features
This spacious studio room has a king-size bed, a well-equipped kitchen, and living and dining areas. The industrial-style bathroom features a claw-foot bath for you to unwind in. An elegant Chesterfield lounge sits in front of the fireplace, creating a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. The cottage has complimentary Wi-Fi and overhead ceiling fans, making it a comfortable retreat year-round.
Building History
The Mechanics House played a significant role in the town's history. It was meticulously restored using authentic local materials, showcasing original weatherboards and ironbark floorboards. The bathroom originally housed the Australian-made Lister motor and copper generator. A wooden insert in the main room covers the original vehicle maintenance pit. The stone retaining wall is made from local Brooman River Stones, and the rear veranda steps are built from Brooman silt stone.
Off-Grid Living
The property is completely off-grid and powered by a central solar system with underground 240V power. Water is collected and stored in galvanised iron tanks, and an instantaneous gas water heater provides hot water.
Brooman Features
The old town site is located on a large bend in the Clyde River, which is great for canoeing, bass fishing, and platypus watching. The area is home to dozens of unique bird species, as well as a resident mob of Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Red-Necked Wallabies, Bandicoots, and Possums.
The buildings date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, when they supported a thriving community of up to 200 people. Brooman once had a post office, school, dance hall, general store, and cottages for the sawmill workers and their families.
